[Died] March 19, 630. A famous prime minister in the early Tang Dynasty, Chang'an, China. Born in Duling, Jingzhao (Chang'an County, Shaanxi Province). His pen name was Keming. His grandfather Gao (Ko) was Minister of Works in the Sui Dynasty. During the Daye period of the Sui Dynasty (605-617), he passed the election for official position and became Fuyang Wei, but left his post and retired to the countryside. When Emperor Gaozu of the Tang Dynasty pacified Chang'an, he joined the Qin Dynasty's army under Li Shimin (later Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty) as a counselor for the Qin Dynasty. He was one of the 18 scholars of the Literature School. Fang Xuanling recognized his talent, and after Emperor Taizong ascended to the throne, he became the left concubine of the prince, Minister of War, and then the right secretary of the Ministry of War, and was enfeoffed as the Duke of Cai. He was known for his decisiveness and was given the nickname "Fang Du."

中国，唐初の名相。京兆杜陵 (陝西省長安県) の人。字は克明。祖父杲 (こう) は隋の工部尚書。隋の大業年間 (605～617) 吏部選に通り，ふ陽尉となったが官を捨て野に下った。唐の高祖が長安を平定すると，秦王府参軍として李世民 (のちの唐の→太宗 ) の幕下に入った。文学館十八学士の一人。房玄齢に才能を認められ，太宗即位後は太子左庶子，兵部尚書を経て尚書右僕射 (ぼくや) となり，蔡国公に封じられた。決断に長じ「房杜」と併称された。
