Public school

Japanese: パブリック･スクール（英語表記）public school

In America, it refers to a public school, but in England, it refers to a traditional, privileged private secondary school. Its origins are said to be Winchester College (1382), which was linked to New College, Oxford and taught Latin grammar. Eton College (1440) and others followed suit, using this as a model. These schools became independent from the previous educational control of the church based on donations for the establishment and maintenance of the schools, and were run by a board of directors that included representatives of the guilds of commerce and industry, and were open to the general public, regardless of their location or social status.

アメリカでは公立学校をさすが，イギリスでは伝統ある特権的私立中等学校をさす。この起源は，オックスフォードのニュー･カレッジに結びついてラテン文法を教えるウィンチェスター校(1382)とされる。これをモデルにイートン校(1440)以下がつづく。これらは学校設立･維持のための寄付金を基盤に従前の教会の教育支配から独立し，商工業ギルドの代表をも含む理事会によって運営され，特定の地域や身分に限らず一般に公開された。
