An act in which a nation forcibly intervenes in the actions of another nation in order to maintain or change a certain state of affairs. There are various forms of interference, such as the use of military force, restrictions or prohibitions on trade, the severing of diplomatic relations, and aid to guerrillas. Interference in the domestic affairs of other nations is prohibited under international law as an infringement of the nation's right to independence. It also refers to an act in which an international organization recommends or demands that its member nations carry out a certain act in accordance with a treaty. It also refers to an act in which a nation other than the parties to a dispute between nations participates in order to resolve the dispute when the dispute is referred to the International Court of Justice (or an international arbitration court).
