British politician. Second son of Pitt the Elder. Known as Pitt the Younger. Initially a Whig. Became Prime Minister at the age of 24 in 1783 and led national politics for 17 years, working to rebuild finances, promote industry, and promote free trade after the American War of Independence, while at the same time suppressing domestic radical reform movements and establishing party politics. In response to the radicalization of the French Revolution, he formed and led the First Coalition in 1793. In 1801, he resigned after clashing with King George III over the Irish issue. In 1804, he reorganized his cabinet and continued the fight by forming the Third Coalition, but died of illness after the defeat at Austerlitz.

英国の政治家。大ピットの次男。小ピットと呼ばれる。初めホイッグ党員。1783年24歳で首相となり17年間国政を指導，アメリカ独立戦争後の財政再建・産業振興・自由貿易推進に尽力，他方では国内の急進的改革運動を抑圧して政党政治を確立した。フランス革命の急進化に対して，1793年第１次対仏大同盟を結成，指導。1801年アイルランド問題で国王ジョージ３世と対立して辞職。1804年再組閣し，第３次対仏大同盟を結び戦いを継続したが，アウステルリッツの敗戦に打撃をうけて病没。
