...A perennial herb of the Asteraceae family that grows in the shade of trees and in moist valleys in mountainous areas (illustration). The underground stems are well developed. The stems are erect and 60-100 cm tall. The leaves concentrated at the bottom of the stem are triangular-cordate shaped and similar to those of butterbur, but the stalks have wings and the undersides are densely covered with white fluff. The flowering season is August to October. The flower head has 7-11 female flowers on the edge and 7-18 bisexual flowers inside. The corolla of each is small, 1.5-2 mm long. The female flowers bear fruit, but the bisexual flowers do not. The atrophic fruit is narrowly obovate, 6-7 mm long, and has many stalked glandular bodies in the upper half, but no pappus. ...
