Sinéad O'connor

Irish singer-songwriter. Born in a working-class area of ​​Dublin. Her singing style is characterized by a conscious use of an Irish accent, performances that are not bound by gender norms or social conventions, and delicate melodies.

Her childhood was heavily shadowed by her parents' discord, divorce, and the death of her mother in an accident. At age 13, she picked up the guitar, and at age 14, she joined rock group In Tua Nua, co-writing their debut single "Take My Hand" (1983). In 1985, she signed with Ensign label and moved to London. Her collaboration with U2 guitarist The Edge (1961- ) marked her first foray into stylistic experimentation. It was around this time that she shaved off all of her head. In 1987, she released her first solo album, The Lion and the Cobra. However, since her music was not the stereotypical one the music market at the time wanted from a female singer, sales were poor at first, but she gained popularity on the American college charts and established an image of being both aggressive and sensitive (live performances from the 1980s can be seen on The Value of Ignorance (1989)).

Her second album, Blue Whisper, released in 1990, featured the single "Love Is All I Want," written by Prince, which topped the charts in 17 countries, helping to establish O'Connor's international fame. Her shaved head was no longer a symbol of resistance for her record company, but a promotional tool. In the same year, she released the charity album Red Hot and Blue to support HIV research and relief, and participated in the Amnesty International concert in Chile, among other political and social activities. Meanwhile, during her US tour in 1990, she became involved in a social issue when the then Governor of New York called for a boycott of concerts scheduled in the state after she refused to play the US national anthem at the Garden State Arts Center in New Jersey. Even after the release of her third album, Since I Sing Standard (1992), she was banned by many radio stations after tearing up a photo of the Pope during a live appearance on an American TV show in protest of the abortion ban. Her fourth album, Universal Mother (1994), marked the end of her contract with Ensign. Subsequent activities included the release of the mini-EP Gospel Oak (1997) to support Rwanda, an appearance in the film Butcher Boy (1997, directed by Neil Jordan (1950- ), and a live collaboration with keyboardist and synthesizer player Thomas Dolby (1958- ) over the Internet, Them Very Full (But We Be Hungry) (1999), to benefit the charity War Child. Since 2000, she has released The Power to Live on Atlantic Records, and in 2002, a collection of Irish traditional songs, Shan, North, Nua, released on Vanguard Records, but in 2003, she announced that she was going to stop making music.

O'Connor became the prototype for the more "outspoken" and "unconventional" female artists who would come later, such as P.J. Harvey (1969-) and Liz Phair (1967-). At the same time, she was an artist who suffered from the typical dilemma faced by stars, the gap between the market's expectations as an opinion leader and her way of life as an individual. In traditional rock "romanticism," this suffering would be resolved by "self-expression" through her own compositions, but in her case, as her biggest hit was written by Prince, she did not stick to writing her own songs, but rather turned to traditional music and standards that she was familiar with. This was what limited her commercial success, but at the same time, it was also her novelty.

　90年の2枚目のアルバム『蒼い囁(ささや)き』ではプリンスが作曲したシングル・カット曲「愛の哀しみ」が17か国のヒット・チャートでトップを飾り、オコーナーの国際的知名度確立につながった。彼女の坊主頭も、レコード会社にとってはもはや抵抗の象徴ではなく、宣伝材料となった。同年HIV研究・救済支援のためのチャリティー・アルバム『レッド・ホット・アンド・ブルー』を発表したほか、チリにおけるアムネスティ・インターナショナル・コンサート参加など、積極的な政治・社会活動を行ってゆく。一方、90年の全米ツアーでは、ニュー・ジャージー州のガーデン・ステート・アート・センターでのアメリカ国歌演奏拒否事件で、当時のニューヨーク州知事がその直後に同州で予定されていたコンサートのボイコットを呼びかけるなど社会問題化した。3枚目のアルバム『永遠の詩集／シンニード・シングス・スタンダード』（1992）発売後も、妊娠中絶禁止に抗議してアメリカのTV番組生出演中にローマ法王の写真を引き裂き、多くのラジオ局で放送禁止処分を受けた。4枚目のアルバム『ユニヴァーサル・マザー』（1994）でエンサインとの契約は終了する。その後の活動としては、ルワンダ支援のミニEP『ゴスペル・オーク』（1997）発表、映画『ブッチャー・ボーイ』（1997、監督ニール・ジョーダンNeil Jordan（1950―　））出演、チャリティー団体ウォー・チャイルド支援のためのキーボード、シンセサイザー奏者トーマス・ドルビーThomas Dolby（1958―　）とのインターネットを使ったライブ共演「ゼム・ベリー・フル（バット・ウィ・ビ・ハングリー）」（1999）などがある。2000年以降は、アトランティックから『生きる力』を、02年にバンガードからアイルランド・トラッド曲集『シャン・ノース・ヌア　永遠の魂』を発表したが、03年音楽活動の停止すると宣言した。

　オコーナーはP・J・ハーベイP. J. Harvey（1969―　）やリズ・フェアLiz Phair（1967―　）など、後に出てくるより「率直」で「破格」な女性アーティストの原形となった。それと同時に、オピニオン・リーダーとしての市場の期待と一個人としての生き方の間の格差という、スターに典型的な板挟みに苦しんだアーティストである。従来のロック的「ロマン主義」ではこうした苦しみは自作曲による「自己表現」に解消されるのだが、彼女の場合は、最大のヒット曲がプリンスの作曲であるように、自作曲にこだわらず、むしろ慣れ親しんだ伝統音楽、スタンダード曲に向かった。それが彼女の商業的成功の歯止めになっていたと同時に、彼女の新しさであった。
