Japanese: 改質法 - かいしつほう

Also known as reforming. One of the petroleum refining processes. An operation that uses heat and catalytic action to change the composition and structure of petroleum hydrocarbons. There are two types of reforming: steam reforming, which uses a catalyst at 700-900°C to react with steam, and catalytic reforming, which uses a suitable catalyst at 500°C and 50 atm in the presence of hydrogen. It is used to obtain high-octane gasoline from petroleum naphtha, and to produce high-octane aromatic hydrocarbons and isoparaffins.

リフォーミングとも。石油精製工程の一つ。石油成分の炭化水素を熱や触媒の作用で変化させて組成や構造を変える操作。700〜900℃で触媒を用いて水蒸気とともに反応させる水蒸気改質（スチームリフォーミング）と，500℃，50気圧で適当な触媒を用いて水素の存在下で行う接触改質がある。石油ナフサを元に，オクタン価の高いガソリンを得たり，オクタン価の高い芳香族炭化水素，イソパラフィンを製造したりするのに利用される。
