An architectural term. Also called an apsis. Generally, it refers to a semicircular or polygonal protrusion at the end of a building. Examples include Roman baths and basilicas, and are often found at the innermost part of various religious spaces, not just Christian ones. It also refers to the semicircular protrusion at the innermost part of basilica-style churches since the early Christian period. In the early Christian period, the inner part was used as a bishop's seat, and an altar was placed in front of it. In the Gothic period, a small altar was often built over the apse. Apse |
