Tannisho - Tannisho

Japanese:
Tannisho - Tannisho

A Buddhist book from the Kamakura period. One volume. Although the author's name is missing, it is generally believed to have been written by Yuien, a disciple of Shinran, and was probably written around 20 to 30 years after Shinran's death. It was written to lament the heresy that had been practiced among the followers after Shinran's death and to return them to the true faith that Shinran had taught. It consists of 18 articles in total, and the main points of this letter are from article 10 onwards, but in addition, articles 1 to 9 contain Shinran's teachings as a mirror to distinguish whether something is heresy or true faith. Eight heresies are taken up in this letter, two of which (articles 11 and 12) were already in existence during Shinran's lifetime, and the six from article 13 onwards probably came to the forefront after Shinran's death. That is, the heretical teachings are that (1) one cannot attain rebirth in the Pure Land by boasting about the original vow, (2) one recitation of the Nembutsu erases the heavy sins of eighty billion kalpas, (3) one can attain Buddhahood in this life even if one is full of earthly desires, (4) repentance can occur many times, (5) one goes to hell in the borderlands, and (6) one can become a large or small Buddha depending on the amount of charity one gives. The phrase "Even good people can attain rebirth in the Pure Land, how much more so can bad people" is well known, and some of the quoted Shinran teachings get to the heart of Shinran's thinking, but on the other hand, there are also some that are not Shinran's, and this point requires strict examination.
