A general term for birds of the passerine order, family Dicaeidae, which includes the flowerpeters. This family is divided into seven genera and about 58 species, including the parakeets. Most species are small birds less than 10 cm in length, and males are usually brightly colored, with red, yellow, blue, or black feathers on the head, chest, back, and lower back. Generally, the sexes are different in color, but the few species that are monochromatic have females that blend in with the color, mainly green or olive brown. The beak is relatively short, strong, and pointed. The legs are also strong.

スズメ目ハナドリ科Dicaeidaeの鳥の総称。この科は，ホウセキドリ類も含めて，7属約58種に分類される。大部分の種は全長約10cm以下の小鳥で，雄はふつう頭，胸，背中，腰などに赤色，黄色，青色，黒色などの羽毛をもち，はでな色をしている。一般に雌雄は異色で，雌と少数の雌雄同色のものは，緑色やオリーブ褐色を主としたじみな色である。くちばしは比較的短く，じょうぶで，先がとがっている。脚もじょうぶである。
