An American record award. Founded in 1957, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) is an annual awards organization whose members are people involved in the record industry. The first awards were given in 1958, and the awards ceremony is held every February. The winners are presented with a trophy called a "Grammy," modeled after an old gramophone for 78 rpm records. Every October, the approximately 5,000 members vote freely for records released in the United States during that year (from October to September of the previous year) in each category, and based on the results, they vote for nominees, with the final vote taking place in January. The categories for the awards vary slightly from year to year, but there are about 60 categories, including best record, album, song, male and female vocals, performance, composition, arrangement, and recording. The range is wide, including pop, rock, jazz, country, and classical. [Aoki Kei] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
