Grammy Awards

An American record award. Founded in 1957, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) is an annual awards organization whose members are people involved in the record industry. The first awards were given in 1958, and the awards ceremony is held every February. The winners are presented with a trophy called a "Grammy," modeled after an old gramophone for 78 rpm records. Every October, the approximately 5,000 members vote freely for records released in the United States during that year (from October to September of the previous year) in each category, and based on the results, they vote for nominees, with the final vote taking place in January. The categories for the awards vary slightly from year to year, but there are about 60 categories, including best record, album, song, male and female vocals, performance, composition, arrangement, and recording. The range is wide, including pop, rock, jazz, country, and classical.

アメリカのレコード賞。1957年に設立された全米レコーディング芸術科学アカデミー（略称NARAS）というレコード業界関係者を会員とした団体による年度賞。58年度が第1回で、毎年2月に発表授賞式が行われ、受賞者には古い78回転レコード用蓄音機をモデルにした「グラミー」という呼称のトロフィーが贈られる。約5000人の会員は毎年10月、その年度（前年10月から9月まで）にアメリカで発表されたレコードを対象として各部門ごとに自由に投票し、その結果によってノミネート（候補）投票を行い、1月に最終投票をする。授賞部門は年度によってすこし異なるが、最優秀レコード、アルバム、歌曲、男女歌唱、演奏、作曲、編曲、録音など約60部門。ポピュラー、ロック、ジャズ、カントリー、クラシックなど範囲が広い。
