The economy of farm households has several characteristics that are different from those of non-farming households. For this reason, in terms of the statistical system, the farm household economy is subject to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries' "Farm Household Economic Survey," which is separate from the "Household Income and Expenditure Survey" conducted by the Statistics Bureau of the Prime Minister's Office for non-farming households.

The first characteristic of the farm economy is that the farm management, which is the production activity of the farmer, and the farm household as a consumer are inseparably linked. This characteristic, which is said to be the inseparability of management and household finances, is a marked difference from the household finances of workers who are employed by a company and earn their income.
