…In the 5th and 6th centuries, Italy was in the midst of the rise and fall of the Germanic kingdoms, and political and economic devastation was severe. At the same time, there was a strong desire for spiritual rehabilitation, and many people from all social classes applied to become monks. Benedict tried to gather these people together and establish a ``school for the service of God.'' Referring to Roman law and the ``Regula magistri'' (monastic rules drafted in the early 6th century, the author of which is unknown), he established his own principles of monastic life that were moderate based on his personal experience, and created an organization as a family with the abbot as the father. This rule eventually became a typical example of Western monasticism, and it competed with the Irish rules and showed overwhelming influence from the 8th century onwards. …
