It is a private institution. Its predecessor was Osaka Higher Medical College, which was established in 1927 (Showa 2) as Japan's first five-year medical college. It was elevated to a university under the University Act in 1946 (Showa 21), and transitioned to a new university in 1952. It consists of the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Nursing, Faculty of Nursing (established in 2010), and Graduate School of Medicine (Doctoral course, four-year course), and also has an affiliated hospital and nursing school. In order to organically link general education and specialized education, the school has a policy of six years of integrated education, with a general education-centered preparatory course and a specialized course focusing on basic and clinical medicine.
