シソ科（APG分類：シソ科）の多年草。茎の断面が四角形であることからカクトラノオ（角虎尾）ともいい、属名のフィソステギアでよぶこともある。茎は直立し、高さ0.6～1.2メートル。葉は対生し、披針(ひしん)形で鋸歯(きょし)がある。7～8月、茎頂に小さな唇状の管状花を数十個、穂状につける。花色は普通は淡紅色であるが、白色の品種もある。北アメリカ原産。切り花、花壇用として観賞する。繁殖は株分けにより、春、秋の彼岸(ひがん)ころ、地下茎を1本ずつ株分けする。実生(みしょう)も可能である。寒さに強いじょうぶな宿根草であるが、夏の極端な乾燥には弱い。また連作すると地下茎が長く伸び、花つきが悪くなるので、毎年植え替えをするとよい。
