Japanese: ハナシュクシャ（英語表記）ginger lily

About 40 species of the Hedychium genus of the Zingiberaceae family are found in East Asia, New Guinea, and Madagascar. They have rhizome-like underground stems, and the above-ground parts resemble ginger. The leaves are sessile, oblong or lanceolate, and arranged in two rows. Beautiful flowers grow in spikes or dense panicles at the ends of the stems. Among them, those cultivated for ornamental purposes are called Hedychium serrata. They are tropical plants, but some species are somewhat cold-tolerant and can overwinter outdoors in warm areas. Such species include the following: Galanga H. coccineum Buch.-Ham. is native to the highlands of the Himalayas, India, and Myanmar.
