The capital of the Maine-et-Loire department in western France. Overlooking the Maine River, a tributary of the Loire River. The cultural and economic center of the Anjou region. Originally the central settlement of the Andecabe, a Celtic clan, it was conquered by Caesar and became a Roman territory. From the end of the 9th century it was part of the Angevin domain, and in the early 13th century it was made an appanage (royal fief) by King Philip II, and in 1481 it became a direct domain of the king. During the French Revolution it was one of the bases for the Vendée Rebellion (1793), and suffered extensive damage during World War II. Currently, it is home to industries in the electrical, electronic, mechanical, textile, food and photography industries, and is also a distribution center for agricultural products and wine from the surrounding area, and is also famous as a tourist destination. Many buildings attest to the city's prosperity in the past, such as the Château de Angers (1228-38, with 17 towers 40-60m high), known as a representative medieval fortress, the Cathedral of St. Maurice (12th-13th century) with its two high spires, and the Hospitalier Saint Jean (12th century).
