Flower mantis shrimp (Odontodactylus japonicus)

Japanese: ハナシャコ(花蝦蛄) - ハナシャコ(英語表記)Odontodactylus japonicus
Flower mantis shrimp (Odontodactylus japonicus)
A crustacean of the family Anthopodidae in the order Stomatopoda. This beautifully colored mantis shrimp is relatively large, reaching a body length of about 15 cm. The dorsal surface of the body is smooth and arched. The base of the phalanges of the prehensile legs is swollen, with 5 to 7 small spines on the inner surface. The sixth abdominal segment and telson segment have many vertical ridges. While it is usually difficult to distinguish between males and females of mantis shrimps based on body color, this species is unusual in that the sexes have different body colors. The dorsal surface of the male's body is brownish red overall, but the front half of the female's body is brownish red and the back half is blue-green.
