Welcome Fire - Mukaebi

Japanese:
Welcome Fire - Mukaebi

A fire lit to welcome guests and spirits. It is widely used on occasions such as welcoming gods, weddings, and funerals, but it often refers to a fire lit to welcome spirits during the Bon festival. In homes celebrating the first Bon festival, the bon mukaebi fires are lit on July 1st or 7th, but it is more common to light them on the 13th or 14th. People burn hemp stalks or wheat straw at the entrance to the house or at crossroads, or set birch bark on split bamboo along the path from the grave to the house, and then light them one by one. People chant to guide their ancestors home by using the light as a guide. The Kanto festival in Akita, the Daimonji-yaki and Torii-bi festivals in Kyoto and other areas, and the Age-taimatsu and Hashiramatsu festivals in various regions are all splendid developments of the Bon mukaebi fires, which have been transformed into send-off fires.
