Gulf of Carpentaria
A bay on the north coast of Australia. It is sandwiched between Cape York, the northern tip of Queensland, to the east and Cape Wessel, the northern coast of the Northern Territory, to the west. It is connected to the Coral Sea through the Torres Strait to the east. Islands such as Groote Eylandt, Sir Edward Pellew, and Wellesley float within the bay. Rivers such as the Mitchell, Flinders, and Leichhardt flow into the bay. Shrimp fishing is carried out here. The towns of Normanton and Burketown are located at the head of the bay.
