Mount Iwasuge

A mountain in the Shiga Plateau in the northeastern part of Nagano Prefecture. It is also called "Iwasugoyama." The geology is an old volcano of andesite that erupted in the Tertiary Period, and erosion is progressing. The mountain is divided into two peaks, Mt. Iwasugo (2,295 meters) and Mt. Uraiwasugo, with the highest point being Mt. Uraiwasugo at 2,341 meters, making it the highest peak in the Shiga Plateau area. Formerly known as Iwasugoyama, this name comes from the fact that it was protected as Mt. Sudaka, which was directly under the control of the Edo Shogunate. The mountainside is covered with beech, spruce, and Japanese hemlock, but at around 2,000 meters, alpine plants such as dicentra, black crowberry, and hemlock cherry can be seen. The national forest area east of the ridgeline is a special protected area for wetland plant communities such as cotton grass, iris arvensis, and white mountain thrush. The climb takes about three hours on foot from Yudanaka, the gateway to Shiga Kogen, via Higashidateyama (by bus and lift).

長野県北東部の志賀高原(しがこうげん)にある山。「いわすごやま」ともいう。地質は第三紀に噴出した安山岩の古い火山で、侵食が進んでいる。山頂は岩菅山（2295メートル）と裏岩菅山に分かれ、最高点は裏岩菅山の2341メートルで、志賀高原一帯の最高峰をなす。昔は岩巣護山(いわすごやま)とよばれたが、これは江戸幕府直属の巣鷹山(すだかやま)として保護されていたことに由来する。山腹はブナ、トウヒ、コメツガなどに覆われているが、2000メートル前後にはコマクサ、ガンコウラン、ツガザクラなどの高山植物がみられる。稜線(りょうせん)から東側の国有林部分は、ワタスゲ、ヒオウギアヤメ、ハクサンチドリなどの湿性植物群落特別保護地区になっている。登山は志賀高原の玄関口湯田中(ゆだなか)から東館山(ひがしたてやま)（バス、リフトを利用）を経て、徒歩3時間。
