Protoperidinium

Recently, some scholars have started to distinguish between freshwater species, Peridinium , and marine species, Protoperidinium , based on the difference in the horizontal and vertical grooves of the armor plates. In zoology, they are classified in the Protozoa phylum and the P. chromoflagellates.
