In Istanbul under the Ottoman Empire, which enjoyed the heyday of Turkish-Islamic culture known as the "Tulip Age" from 1718 onwards, small merchants and the lower classes, who were suffering from inflation, began a rebellion in 1730 under the leadership of Patrona Halil (?-1730), calling for social reform. The rebels executed Grand Vizier Ibrahim Pasha, forced the Sultan to abdicate, and controlled Istanbul for a time, but because they had no concrete plan for reform, Halil and other leaders were killed by a cunning plot from the Ottoman court, and the rebellion was quickly put down.
