Manganji [Hot Spring] - Manganji

Japanese: 満願寺[温泉] - まんがんじ

This hot spring is located in Minamioguni-machi, Aso-gun, in the northeastern part of Kumamoto Prefecture. It is a saline sulfur spring with temperatures of 33-42°C. It overlooks the Shizugawa River that flows at the foot of the Aso outer rim. Manganji is an old temple said to have been built by Hojo Tokisada and Sadamune during the Mongol invasions, and this was once the temple bathhouse. Since the JNR Miyahara Line (converted into a bus route in 1984) was extended to Higo-Oguni in 1954, bathers from far away have also started to visit. There is only one inn, and an open-air bath on the riverbank. [Sakakibara Takashi]

熊本県北東部，阿蘇郡南小国町にある温泉。含食塩硫黄泉，33～42℃。阿蘇外輪山のすそ野を流れる志津川に臨む。満願寺は，元寇の際に北条時定･定宗が建立したと伝えられる古寺で，古くはその寺湯であった。1954年国鉄宮原線(1984年，バス路線に転換)が肥後小国まで開通して以来，遠方の浴客も訪れるようになった。旅館は1軒だけで，川岸には露天ぶろがある。【榊原貴士】
