Armenian art - Armenian art (English spelling)
Art that flourished in the Armenian region. It is characterized by Christian art with a strong Eastern influence. Many famous works of architecture, painting, sculpture, etc. remain. Its most developed period was from the 5th to the 7th century, the second period was from the late 9th century to the 11th century, the third period was from the 12th to the 14th century, and it declined under Islamic rule after that. Its art was influenced by Byzantium, Syria, and Palestine on the one hand, and by Sassanid Persia on the other (→ Sassanid art). Therefore, motifs from both cultures were often mixed in paintings and sculptures, resulting in a unique style. Illustrations in manuscripts from the 9th to 14th centuries are influenced by both cultures, and also incorporate motifs from Islamic art. Manuscripts from the 13th century in particular have a high level of artistic quality.
