Battle of Nagashino

Japanese: 長篠の戦 - ながしののたたかい

A battle fought in 1575 near Nagashino in Mikawa Province between the allied forces of Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu and Takeda Katsuyori. Katsuyori's forces had invaded Mikawa and surrounded Nagashino Castle, but Nobunaga and Ieyasu's forces set up a horse-proof fence at Shitarahara, about 2km west of the castle, and fired a volley of 3,000 guns at the Takeda cavalry, resulting in a major defeat. This was a groundbreaking battle that first demonstrated the power of firearms.

1575年織田信長・徳川家康の連合軍と武田勝頼が三河国長篠付近で戦った合戦。三河に侵入し，長篠城を囲んだ勝頼軍を，信長・家康軍が城の西約2kmの設楽原(したらがはら)に馬防柵(さく)を設け鉄砲3000挺(ちょう)の一斉射撃で武田方の突撃する騎馬軍を撃ち，これを大敗せしめた。鉄砲の威力を初めて示した画期的な戦い。
