This law states that when a reaction mixture in a state of chemical equilibrium is subjected to an external change (such as temperature or pressure) that disrupts the equilibrium, the reaction will proceed in a direction that counteracts the change, and a new equilibrium state will be reached. This law was derived by HL Le Chatelier (1884) and KF Brown (1887), so it is also called the Le Chatelier-Brown law. For example, if heat is added to a system in chemical equilibrium to raise the temperature, the reaction will proceed in an endothermic direction, and if it is cooled to lower the temperature, the reaction will proceed in an exothermic direction, and a new equilibrium will be reached.
