A magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred near Erzincan in eastern Turkey on March 13, 1992. 554 people were killed, and about half of the buildings in the city were damaged. It was caused by right-lateral slip (→ slip) activity on the North Anatolian Fault (→ fault). In 1939, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred slightly west of the epicenter of this earthquake, killing 32,000 people, and other major earthquakes caused by the same factor have occurred many times in the past.
