An old city in the southeastern part of Saitama Prefecture. Established as a city in 1967. Located at the southernmost tip of the Omiya Plateau, it is surrounded by Kawaguchi City. Its boundaries are the second smallest of any city in Japan after Warabi City, and the entire city is urbanized. The city center developed as a post town and market town on the Nikko Onari Kaido road, and is served by National Route 122 and the Saitama Rapid Railway Line. It is close to Angyo in Kawaguchi City, and is a specialty of seedlings. There are factories for machinery, food, etc., and residential development is progressing rapidly. 埼玉県南東部の旧市。1967年市制。大宮台地の最南端にあたり,周囲は川口市に囲まれている。市域は全国の都市で蕨市に次いで2番目に狭く,全域が市街化している。中心市街は日光御成街道の宿場町,市場町として発達,国道122号線,埼玉高速鉄道線が通じる。川口市の安行(あんぎょう)に近く,苗木が特産。機械,食品などの工場があり,宅地化も急速に進んでいる。2011年10月川口市へ編入。6.22km2。6万900人(2010)。
