Japanese: 和歌色葉 - わかいろは

A treatise on waka poetry from the early Kamakura period. Written by Jokaku in 1198 (Kenkyu 9), it was proofread by Kensho and presented to Emperor Gotoba. It consists of three volumes, with the first volume covering all the essential knowledge for poets, such as the origin and types of waka poetry, a discussion of excellent poems, successive anthologies and important poets, aliases and famous places, while the second and third volumes provide interpretations of 205 difficult waka poems from the Manyoshu to the Horikawa Hyakushu. It often relies on the Ougi Sho and Waka Shōgaku Sho and lacks originality, but it is important for understanding the waka theories of poets around the Rokujō family at the time. [Akase Tomoko]
