Japanese:
Ashikaga Ietoki
Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A military commander in the Kamakura period. Son of Ashikaga Yoriuji, grandfather of Takauji. Mother was daughter of Uesugi Shigefusa. Wife was daughter of Hojo Tokishige. According to the book "Nan Taiheiki" written by Imagawa Ryoshun, a member of the Ashikaga clan, a letter left behind by Minamoto no Yoshiie, ancestor of the Ashikaga clan, read, "I shall be reborn as my grandson in seven generations and take over the world," but the seventh generation from Yoshiie was Ietoki, and when Ietoki realized that he could not take over the world, he committed suicide, praying, "Please shorten my life and let me take over the world in three generations." It is certain that the letter left behind existed, but the above story cannot be confirmed. According to the memorial tablet at Hōō-ji Temple in Ashikaga City, his posthumous name was Hokokujidono Yoshitada. There are various theories about the year of his death, including 1309 (Enkei 2).
