Takano Soju - Takano Soju

Haiku poet. Born in Ibaraki Prefecture. Real name Yoshimi. After graduating from the former First Higher School, he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Tokyo Imperial University. While working as an assistant in the forensic medicine department, he joined his colleagues Ogata Shuntou and Mizuhara Shuoushi and began composing haiku. He studied under Takahama Kyoshi and quickly distinguished himself with his unique style of descriptive haiku, becoming one of the "4S" of the magazine "Hototogisu" alongside Shuoushi, (Yamaguchi) Seishi, and (Awano) Seiho. He became a professor at Niigata Medical University, and then Nara Medical University. In 1957 (Showa 32), he founded the magazine "Seri" and continued to edit it until his death. His haiku collections include "First Crow" (1947), "Snowflakes" (1952), and "Wild Flower Collection" (1953).

俳人。茨城県生まれ。本名与巳(よしみ)。旧制一高を経て東京帝国大学医学部を卒業し、法医学教室の助手として勤務中、同僚の緒方春桐(おがたしゅんとう)、水原秋桜子(しゅうおうし)の仲間に加わって句作を始めた。高浜虚子(きょし)に師事、写生俳句に独自の風格を備えてたちまち頭角を現し、秋桜子、（山口）誓子(せいし)、（阿波野）青畝(せいほ)と並んで『ホトトギス』4Sの1人にあげられた。新潟医大教授、次いで奈良医大教授となる。1957年（昭和32）『芹(せり)』を創刊、没するまで主宰した。句集に『初鴉(はつがらす)』（1947）、『雪片(せっぺん)』（1952）、『野花(やか)集』（1953）などがある。
