A tool used to shave and finish the surface of wood, with a shallow triangular blade resembling the tip of a spear attached to a wooden handle. Until the appearance of the modern-day dai-ganna (base plane) at the end of the 16th century, it was simply called kanna or kana, but after that it came to be called yari-ganna. The Wamyōshō states that a kanna is used to shave the height and depth of the blade marks of a chiyo (adzep), and it is assumed that it was mainly used to shave large lumber for construction. It was therefore thought to have been used with both hands, with a tip of about 10 cm long and a handle of 50 to 60 cm long. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
