Sampan - Sanpan (English spelling)

Originally, it was a small wooden flat-bottomed boat used along the Chinese coast, and is derived from the Chinese word "sanban." In Japan, it was a colloquial name for a port ship, or a transportation ship, but this term is no longer used.

A tosen, also called a tsui-sen or a launch, is a small ferry boat that connects ships anchored offshore to land, and can be thought of as a kind of sea taxi. It is used not only for communication with ships offshore and for transporting crew members, their families, and materials, but also for port tours and sea transport between various points within the port. In Southeast Asia, it is also used for water peddling.

本来は中国沿岸で用いられている小型の木造平底船のことで、中国語の「三板」に由来する。日本では港内の通船(つうせん)、交通船の俗称であったが、現在はこの用語は使用されていない。

　通船は通い船やランチともよばれるが、沖に停泊している船と陸との小型連絡船であり、いわば海上タクシーといえる。沖の船との連絡業務や、船員や船員家族あるいは資材などの輸送にあたるだけでなく、港の見学や港内各地点の海上連絡にも使われる。東南アジアでは、そのほかに水上行商などにも使われている。
