A North Indian musicologist. Through thorough research of Sanskrit texts, investigation of the musical practices of various gharanas (a type of school), and the publication of music notations using a method he invented himself, he established his own classification of ragas into 10 basic scales (thats), wrote The Hindustani Music System and other works, and streamlined the theory of North Indian classical music, which had been in disarray. He advocated for the first All India Conference to be held in 1916. He also contributed to the establishment of the Maris Conservatory of Music in Lucknow (established in 1926, now the Bhatkande Conservatory of Music) and the Gandharva Conservatory, which remain the centers of higher education in classical music to this day.
