Czechoslovakian military officer and politician. Born in Slovakia. After graduating from the University of Prague, he went to France and served as an officer in the French army during World War I. In February 1916, he became vice-chairman of the Czechoslovak Congress in Paris, organized Czechoslovak legions in France and Italy, and participated in the war of intervention against the Soviet Union. He became a central figure in the independence movement along with Masaryk and others. From November 1918, he served as Minister of War in the Czechoslovak Provisional National Assembly, but died in an airplane accident the following year.

チェコスロバキアの軍人，政治家。スロバキア出身。プラハ大学を卒業してフランスに渡り，フランス軍将校として第１次世界大戦に従軍。1916年２月，パリのチェコスロバキア会議の副議長となり，フランス，イタリアでチェコスロバキア軍団を組織し，対ソ干渉戦争に参加，マサリクらとともに独立運動の中心的人物となる。1918年11月より，チェコスロバキア暫定国民議会の陸相を務めるが，翌年飛行機事故死。
