Patch means to patch, gather, or piece. It also refers to joining small pieces of cloth together in a mosaic style.

Origin and fabric

At first, peasants patched up their clothes or repaired damaged areas out of necessity, but it eventually became a peasant art, and beautiful decorative pieces were gradually produced. In Europe, from the 17th to the 19th centuries, wall hangings and bed covers with inlaid scenes of the birth of Christ, myths and stories were made on silk and lustrous cotton, and many of these remain in museums around the country. American patchwork is a highly practical craft that developed from the idea of Europeans patching together damaged clothing and small amounts of fabric they brought with them to the New World of America. As a result, many of the pieces that remain date back to the 18th and 19th centuries.

The fabrics used are cotton, linen, wool, silk, synthetic prints, stripes, polka dots, solid colors, tulle, lace. Chevron tape and braid are used in some areas.

When sewing together, it is important to choose fabrics of the same quality as much as possible and avoid fabrics with different degrees of elasticity. In addition, thin fabrics or fabrics that stretch easily may be lined on the back with thin Japanese paper.

The basic designs are triangles, squares, pentagons, hexagons, rectangles, circles, boxes, and diamonds.

Stitches used and their uses

There are two basic types of stitch: running stitch and blind stitch. Depending on the fabric, other stitches include cross stitch, crisscrossed herringbone, blanket stitch, daisy stitch, etc. Tape, braid, lace, etc. may also be used for the seams.

Applications include interior decorations, clothing, accessories, bags, etc.

Japanese:

パッチは、継ぎはぎ、寄せ集め、ピーシング（縫い合わせ）という意味である。また小布をモザイク風にはぎ合わせることをいう。

由来と布地

最初は農民などが必要上、衣服に継ぎを当てたり、傷んだところを除いてはぎ合わせていたものだが、やがて農民芸術となり、しだいに装飾的な美しい作品がつくられるようになった。ヨーロッパでは17～19世紀にかけて、絹地や、つやのある木綿地などに、キリスト生誕や神話、物語を部分的にはめ込んだ壁掛け、ベッドカバーなどがつくられ、各地の博物館に多く残されている。アメリカン・パッチワークは、ヨーロッパからアメリカの新大陸に移住した人たちが持って行った、衣服やわずかな布地が傷んできたとき、それらをはぎ合わせて使ったことがもとになった実用性の強いものであり、これが発展していった手芸である。そのため、作品は18～19世紀のものが多く残されている。

　布地は、木綿、麻、毛、絹、化合繊のプリント、縞(しま)、水玉、無地、チュール、レース。部分的に山型テープ、ブレードなどが使われる。

　注意することは、縫い合わせるときに、できるだけ同質の布を選び、伸縮の度の違うものは避ける。また、薄い布や伸びやすい布には、裏側に薄い和紙で裏打ちをする場合もある。

　図案としては、三角、四角、五角、六角、長方形、円、升形、菱(ひし)形などが基本になる。
