Omi Jofu

Japanese:
Omi Jofu
A regional brand of the Kinki region, Shiga prefecture.
It is produced in Aisho Town, Higashiomi City, and Hikone City in Aichi County. It is a linen fabric that developed from the Kamakura period, and its name spread throughout the country thanks to the efforts of Omi merchants. In the Edo period, under the protection of the Hikone Domain, dyeing techniques also developed significantly, and unique and elegant ikat patterns were created. Currently, it is broadly divided into namahira and ikat based on the production technique. Both originally involved hand-woven plain weaving, but traditional handmade techniques such as kushi-oshi printing and stencil printing are preserved. In March 1977, it was designated a national traditional craft by the Minister of International Trade and Industry (currently the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry).
