A city in Jagang Province, North Korea. It faces the cliffs on the right bank of the Dokro River, with Gohyeonryeong at its back, making it a strategic location. During the Joseon Dynasty, it was an old town where a military camp was established to guard against invasions by northern peoples. It was a remote mountain area, but with the establishment of Jagang Province it became the centre of the province and a cultural city with political, economic and cultural institutions. Within the city are the Kanggye Youth Power Plant, paper and pencil factories, Kanggye University of Technology and a veterinary university. Jinpung Pavilion, one of the Eight Views of Kansai, is located on a steep cliff on the bank of the Dokro River. It was built in 1473, but suffered many war damages and was rebuilt in 1962.
