A commuter railway company mainly operating between Hyogo and Himeji. It was founded in 1907 as Hyogo Electric Tramway and in 1919 as Kobe-Himeji Electric Railway. In 1927, Ujigawa Electric acquired both companies and merged them, and in 1933, the railway division of Ujigawa Electric separated and established the company. In 1936, the company started bus business in Kobe. In 1952, Sanyo Department Store was established. In order to cope with the increase in population along the railway line due to rapid economic growth, the company worked to strengthen transportation capacity and improve station facilities. In 1968, with the opening of the Kobe Kosoku Railway, the company started mutual direct service with Keihanshin Express Railway (→Hankyu Railway) and Hanshin Electric Railway. In 1988, the company started operating as a Class 2 railway business on the Kobe Kosoku Line (abolished in 2010). The company also develops land along the line and engages in real estate business.

兵庫―姫路間を中心とする都市通勤線的な鉄道会社。1907年創立の兵庫電気軌道と 1919年創立の神戸姫路電気鉄道が前身。1927年宇治川電気が両社を買収合併し，1933年宇治川電気から鉄道部が分離して設立。1936年神戸市でバス事業を開始。1952年山陽百貨店を設立。高度経済成長に伴う沿線人口の増加に対応するため，輸送力の強化，駅施設の改良に努め，1968年には神戸高速鉄道の開通に合わせて，京阪神急行電鉄（→阪急電鉄），阪神電気鉄道との相互直通運転を開始した。1988年神戸高速線で第2種鉄道事業としての営業を開始（2010廃止）。そのほか沿線の土地開発も進めて不動産事業なども行なっている。
