Born: February 20, 1925 in Tokyo [Died] January 10, 1990. The 44th Yokozuna in Tokyo. Real name: Nakata Kiyoshi. First entered the ring in spring 1939. During his makushita period, he teamed up with fellow student Dewanishiki to compete in the first match of the Hanazumo tournament. He distinguished himself in the makuuchi division as a skilled wrestler, and after winning four times, including consecutive championships, he became Yokozuna after the autumn tournament in 1954. His famous matches with rival Yokozuna Wakanohana (→ Wakanohana Kanshi), who was promoted at the same time, are well known, and he established the "Tochiwaka era." He won the Technique Award nine times and won ten times. He retired in May 1960 and took the elder name Kasugano. In 1974, he became the chairman of the Japan Sumo Association. In 1985, he built the new Kokugikan Sumo Hall in Ryōgoku, and in 1988, he handed the chairmanship to Futagoyama (the first Wakanohana).
