When atoms or molecules emit or absorb spectral lines, they are generally split into several lines when placed in a magnetic field (Zeeman effect). In a particularly strong magnetic field, the splitting and strength of the lines differs from that in a weak magnetic field. This phenomenon is called the Paschen-Back effect. It occurs because the way in which various angular momentums are coupled within atoms or molecules differs depending on the strength of the magnetic field. 原子や分子がスペクトル線を発光または吸収する際,磁場の中に置かれると一般にそのスペクトル線が数本に分れるが (ゼーマン効果 ) ,特に強い磁場の中では分れ方や強度が,弱い磁場の場合とは異なった様子を示す。この現象をパッシェン=バック効果という。これは磁場の強さに応じて,原子や分子内でのいろいろな角運動量の結合の仕方が違ってくるのが原因である。
