When atoms or molecules emit or absorb spectral lines, they are generally split into several lines when placed in a magnetic field (Zeeman effect). In a particularly strong magnetic field, the splitting and strength of the lines differs from that in a weak magnetic field. This phenomenon is called the Paschen-Back effect. It occurs because the way in which various angular momentums are coupled within atoms or molecules differs depending on the strength of the magnetic field.
