The capital of French New Caledonia, Melanesia, South Pacific. Located on the southwest coast of the main island of New Caledonia, it is a port city. It is the headquarters of the international organization Pacific Community (formerly the South Pacific Commission). Formerly known as Port de France. Population 76,293 (1996), 99,926 (2014 census). It is a beautiful French-style town worthy of being called Petite France of the South Pacific, and the first modern city in Melanesia. Its economy depends on nickel ore exports, and since the Meiji era, more than 6,000 Japanese workers have traveled there, leading to an era of mixed race second and third generation residents. Europeans, mainly French, make up the majority of the population, outnumbering Melanesians, and there are also people from Wallis and Futuna, Tahitians, Indonesians, and Vietnamese. Noumea International Airport, located 52 km northwest at Tontouta, has daily flights to Sydney and Auckland in New Zealand, as well as direct flights to Tokyo.
