Belladonna lily

...A bulbous plant of the Amaryllidaceae family cultivated for ornamental purposes (illustration). What is usually called amaryllis in gardening is the Hippeastrum genus, and is distinguished as a separate genus from the true amaryllis, Amaryllis belladonna L. (English name belladonna lily). True amaryllis is a semi-cold-hardy bulbous plant of one genus and one species native to South Africa, and was introduced to Japan around the end of the Meiji period.
