Architecture - Architecture

Originally, architecture meant a building or architectural style, but in the context of computers, it refers to the structure and mechanisms of a computer that users need to know the bare minimum about. It has been used since the 1960s, and in the early days of computer popularity, users always had to program, so architecture meant the hardware mechanisms required for programming, or more specifically, the set of machine codes. Nowadays, it is often used more vaguely to mean the design method or basic design framework of a computer as an information processing machine that includes software such as the operating system (OS). It is also increasingly being used to talk about software architecture, human interface architecture, and even the architecture of the entire information processing system, including the network. The term is therefore used in terms such as parallel processing architecture, distributed processing architecture, and object-oriented architecture.

もともと建造物あるいは建築様式のことをさすが、コンピュータ関連でアーキテクチャーという場合は、ユーザーが必要最小限知っておく必要のあるコンピュータの構造と仕組みをいう。1960年代から使われだしたもので、コンピュータの普及初期にはユーザーはかならずプログラミングをしたため、アーキテクチャーとはプログラミングをするために必要なハードウェアの仕組み、もっと具体的には機械語のセットをさしていた。現在ではより漠然と、OS（オペレーティングシステム）などソフトウェアを含んだ情報処理機械としてのコンピュータの設計方式、あるいは設計の基本的枠組みなどをいう場合も多い。また、ソフトウェアのアーキテクチャー、ヒューマン・インターフェースのアーキテクチャー、さらにはネットワークを含む情報処理システム全体のアーキテクチャーなどについて語られる場合も増えてきている。このことばは、したがって、並列処理アーキテクチャー、分散処理アーキテクチャー、オブジェクト指向アーキテクチャーなどのように使われている。
