Originally, it was pronounced "dasho" and referred to a horse-drawn sack sent on horseback, but from the Heian and Kamakura periods onwards, it was usually pronounced "dakou" or "dagou" and came to refer to meals eaten while away from home. The above term was widely used for people of high rank, from aristocrats and generals to ordinary samurai and monks, but examples of its use show that it was not used to refer to formal meals served at inns, camps, and temporary accommodations such as those brought with oneself when going out or accompanying a battle, or food for soldiers when invited to a military facility, but rather to meals eaten at lodgings, temporary huts, and campsites during travel, marches, hunting parties, and outings.
