La Serena (English spelling)

Japanese: ラ･セレナ（英語表記）La Serena

It is the capital of the 4th region in central Chile. It has a population of 117,983 (1995). Although it is located in a dry area, it is a distribution center for irrigated agricultural products (fruits and vegetables) from the surrounding area, and is particularly famous for pisco (a distilled liquor made from grapes) from the Elqui Valley. It is 470 km north of Santiago, but it is connected by rail and highways, and many tourists visit in the summer. It was founded in 1543. Independence was declared here in 1818, and even today the city retains traces of that time. There are facilities such as technical schools, museums, and parks.

チリ中央部，第4地域の主都。人口11万7983(1995)。乾燥地帯にあるが，周辺の灌漑農業の農産物(果物，野菜)の集散地で，とくにエルキの谷のピスコ(ブドウからつくる蒸留酒)は有名。サンチアゴ市から470km北にあるが鉄道，ハイウェーが通じ，夏には多くの観光客が訪れる。1543年に建設された。1818年には独立宣言がこの地で行われ，今も市街は当時の面影を残す。専門学校，博物館，公園などの施設が整備されている。
