Pack means "to wrap." It is a type of facial beauty treatment in which a pack is applied to the face after washing, and the face is "wrapped" in an artificial film. By applying the pack, the epidermis is sealed off from the outside air. Body temperature rises and sweating is promoted, which opens the sebaceous glands and stimulates metabolism. This allows waste products to be excreted from the skin, and at the same time the drying power of the pack has a sort of massaging effect on the skin. In addition, the moisture that evaporates from the skin surface and accumulates between the pack and the stratum corneum of the epidermis becomes more flexible.

Pack base

[1] Oil Packs Oil packs are made by soaking cotton in natural oils such as olive oil or camellia oil in a hot water bath and then applying the cotton to the face. [2] Vinyl Packs These are made with a water-soluble mucilage base, and when applied to the face and dried they form a complete film, which is then peeled off. [3] Powder Packs These are made with a flour base and are kneaded with eggs, milk, honey, etc. before applying.

In either case, after the pack has dried, remove it and tighten the epidermis with lotion etc. Apply to the entire face (avoiding the area around the eyes), and when removing it, it is important not to wipe it off forcefully and not to irritate the skin more than necessary.

Its history is long, and it was practiced in ancient Rome, where people would apply porridge made from boiled rice or broad bean flour, or bread soaked in donkey's milk, to their faces before going to bed. In Japan during the Edo period, there was a method of conditioning the skin by cutting up melons, which contain a lot of water, and placing them on the face, and this can also be considered a type of pack.

Simple packing techniques

Add water to flour, knead until slightly stiff, and mix with eggs, fruit, honey, etc. depending on the purpose. Apply two-thirds of the pack evenly to the face, place a damp piece of gauze (face-sized with cut-outs for the eyes and nose) on top, and then apply the remaining amount on top. Leave to dry naturally for 20-30 minutes (exposing it to infrared rays is more effective), then roll up the gauze starting from the chin. Tighten the skin with lotion.

Eggs, milk, honey, etc. increase the metabolism of the skin. With eggs, you can cleanse the skin by using the adhesive action of the egg white, or you can add nutrients such as cholesterol and vitamins contained in the yolk, or you can mix the two together to get a synergistic effect. Milk helps the skin absorb fat, protein, and vitamins, while honey is effective for astringency and bleaching due to its protein, enzymes, vitamin C, and sugar.

パックは「包む」という意味。文字どおり、洗顔後にパック剤を顔面に塗り、人工的な皮膜で「包む」美顔術の一種。パック剤を塗ることで、表皮は外気から遮断される。体温があがり、発汗作用が促されるので皮脂腺(せん)は開き、新陳代謝が旺盛(おうせい)になる。このため、皮膚の老廃物は排泄(はいせつ)され、同時にパック剤の乾燥する力が皮膚に一種のマッサージ効果をもたらす。また、皮膚表面から蒸発してパック剤との間にたまった水分によって、表皮の角質層はより柔軟になる。

パックの基剤

〔1〕オイル・パック　オイル・パック剤は、オリーブ油、椿油(つばきあぶら)などの天然油脂を湯煎(ゆせん)して脱脂綿にしみ込ませ、そのまま顔にのせる。〔2〕ビニル・パック　水溶性の粘液質を基剤としたもので、顔に塗布して乾燥すると完全に膜をつくるので、それをはがす。〔3〕粉パック　小麦粉を基剤とし、卵、牛乳、蜂蜜(はちみつ)などを混ぜて練り合わせ、塗布する。

　いずれもパック後、乾燥したらそれを除き、化粧水などで表皮を引き締める。顔全体（目の周辺は避ける）に塗り、はがすときには無理に拭(ふ)き取って肌に必要以上の刺激を与えないことがたいせつである。

　その歴史は古く、古代ローマでも行われていて、米の粉やソラマメの粉を煮込んだ粥(かゆ)とか、パンをロバの乳に浸したものなどを、就寝前に顔に塗ったといわれる。日本でも江戸時代に、水分を多く含んだウリ類を切って顔にのせたりして肌を整える方法があったが、これも一種のパックとみることができる。

簡単なパック術

小麦粉に水を加え、やや固めに練り、目的に即して、卵や果実、蜂蜜などを混ぜる。このパック剤の3分の2を顔面にむらなく塗り、ガーゼ（目と鼻の部分をくりぬいた顔の大きさのもの）を湿らせてのせ、残りをその上から塗る。20～30分ぐらい自然乾燥させ（赤外線を照射すると、より効果的）、ガーゼをあごのほうから巻き取る。化粧水で肌を引き締める。

　卵、牛乳、蜂蜜などは皮膚の新陳代謝を高める。卵は、白身の膠着(こうちゃく)作用を利用して皮膚を清浄にする方法と、黄身に含まれているコレステロール、ビタミンなどの栄養を与える方法、さらに相乗効果を得るために双方を混ぜて用いる方法がある。牛乳は脂肪、タンパク質、ビタミンなどの皮膚への吸収、蜂蜜もタンパク質、酵素、ビタミンC、糖分などによる収斂(しゅうれん)、漂白作用に効果がある。
