The world's highest peak in the Himalayas, located in eastern Nepal on the Chinese border. It is 8,848m above sea level (other theories include 8,882m, 8,842m, and 8,840m). In Tibetan, it is called Chomolungma, meaning "Mother Goddess of the Earth." In Nepali, it is called Sagarmatha (Head of the Sky). The English name Everest is named after G. Everest, the first director of the Survey of India. The main peak is pyramidal, and after repeated failures since the Bruce team in 1922 and the Norton team in 1923 (Mallory and Irvine went missing), it was first reached on May 29, 1953 by EP Hillary of the British Hunt team and the Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing. In May 1970, a Japanese team (Captain Saburo Matsukata) also reached the summit from the southeast ridge (the sixth time in the world). In addition to the main peak, there are Lhotse, Nuptse, and other peaks, forming a mountain range. The best months for climbing are April to May and October to November. The area is part of Nepal's national park and was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1979. → Related topics Alpine Club | Naoki Uemura | Gyachung Kang [Mountain] | Sagarmatha National Park | Shipton | Cho Oyu [Mountain] | Mountaineering | Nepal | Makalu [Mountain] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
標高8848m(他に8882,8842,8840m等の説がある)。 ネパール語ではサガルマーターSagarmatha(大空の頭)。
