A port city on the Coromandel Coast at the southern tip of the Deccan Peninsula in India. Capital of Tamil Nadu state. Renamed Chennai in 1996. A trading port third after Mumbai (Bombay) and Kolkata (Calcutta), it exports cotton, leather, and oilseeds. Industries include textiles, chemicals, leather, and machinery. It has a university (established in 1857), a museum, and an observatory. The British East India Company was founded in 1639 and built Fort St. George (current state capital) as a foothold for its expansion into India. It later developed as a trading port.
